This year marks the 400th year since the arrival of the first African slaves in the United States. The Slave Trade ripped millions of Africans from their motherland and transported them to lives of suffering, segregation and humiliation in Europe and America. Many of these people passed through Ghana on their way to the slave ships.

In modern times, however, Ghana has been a beacon of hope for Africans. The country and its leader Dr. Kwame Nkrumah led the drive for pan-African political independence, and it was the first Sub-Saharan country to throw off the yoke of colonialism, winning its independence from Britain in 1957.

The Sankofa Tour is about hope, commemoration, and rebirth. To show our commitment to these ideas, we are including an Ancestry DNA test in the price of the trip, which will reveal a participant’s ethnic and tribal background. Also, the trip features a Traditional African Naming Ceremony, where travelers can receive a new African name, to show their spiritual rebirth.

This is truly a once in a lifetime trip. We will help you explore the dungeons of the slave trade, but also the historic sites of the Civil Rights Movement, connecting the freedom struggles of the past to our present reality. Sankofa means, “Go back and get it!”, and our tour helps you to go back and get your history, while helping you to move forward in hope and faith. We must look back before we can truly move forward.

In addition to visiting the historical sites from the slave trade, you will encounter the stunning countryside on a safari where you will experience the sights and sounds of African wildlife in their natural habitat, and savor the friendship of the Ghanian people and their unique culture.

The Sankofa journey is much more than a vacation — it is a journey that will take you to unforgettable places.
